Voluntary Benefits Plan
by Dave Spriddle, Clerk Craft Director, Philadelphia Area Local

I would like to dispel any misconception among some of you that non-union members enjoy the same benefits and privileges afforded to our APWU members.

A perfect example is the APWU Voluntary Benefits Plan.  This inexpensive payroll deduction plan was developed exclusively for APWU members to provide additional protection for you and your family.  The plan includes the following:

 1) Legal Services - For a low APWU group rate, you get advice and consultations with an attorney of your choice regarding administrative proceedings, civil litigation, consumer transactions, criminal matters, domestic and family matters, estate planning, financial planning, tenant matters, personal injury, real estate transactions, and traffic matters.

 2) Basic Care Hospital Plan - Transitional employees are eligible.  The basic care hospital plan pays a specific daily benefit if an insured person is hospitalized due to an injury or sickness, or has surgery which is required to diagnose or treat a non-job related injury or sickness.

 3) Hospital Indemnity Insurance - Cash payment up to $200 per day while in the hospital.  Benefits begin the first day of hospitalization and are paid for up to 365 days of hospital confinement.  Acceptance is guaranteed for all eligible members.

 4) Term Life Insurance - Member and spouse may apply for insurance in amounts of $10,000 to $200,000.  You may also retain this coverage when you retire.  You may also apply for insurance on your eligible children, from age 15 days to 25 years (if a full-time student).

 5)  Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance - As an APWU member, you are eligible to receive accidental death and dismemberment insurance in amounts of $25,000 to $250,000.

6)  Short Term Disability Income Protection Plan - If you are totally disabled as a result of an injury or sickness, and under a doctor's care, You are eligible to receive $500 to $3000 a month for up to 12 months. (TEs are not presently eligible for this plan).

 7) Long Term Disability Income Protection Plan - You are eligible to receive $500 to $3000 a month, for up to 48 months if you are totally disabled, and under a doctor's care. (TEs are not presently eligible for this plan).

 8) The American Postal Workers Union Mastercard - A low interest, no annual fee, 25 day grace period credit card good at thousands of ATMs and millions of merchants.

As an APWU member you are also eligible for representation at unemployment hearings, EEO hearings and OWCP hearings.  As a non-member, you are on your own.

It pays to belong to the APWU!
