To keep up with the current fad of "Top 10 Lists" APWU has developed our very own list. While it Is not intended to be as humorous as Dave Letterman's or the latest Clinton top 10 list, rather It Is intended to be helpful to our new PTF's as they begin their careers as postal workers.
 
#10. Keep a copy. Request or make copies of everything turned into management; medical documentation submitted, 30, 60, and 90 day evaluations, and leave request forms (3971's) for example.

#9. Request a steward anytime you have a question or a problem. We can represent you, even during your 90 day probationary period. You can request a steward through your supervisor. Asking for a steward cannot be used against you.

#8. Come to the union for facts. Don't accept what Supervisors or co-workers say as correct . They don't always know. Never believe rumors.

#7. Learn your rights under the Family Medical Leave Act and use it The union has this information.

#6. Postal Inspectors are not your friends. If one approaches you ask for a steward immediately. They do not have to provide you with a steward unless you ask for one.

#5. Learn your rights under the National Agreement and the LMOU (local contract). This information is available from the union.

#4. Learn the history of the Union and Collective Bargaining. You can better appreciate what you have when you understand how you got it. Management did not simply bestow wages and other benefits on employees. The local union's persistent argument on under staffing and its effect on current employees and contract violations are responsible for new career appointments.

#3. Attend local union meetings and become actively involved. The union always needs volunteers for committees and other things. You may want to take steward's training. Even it you don't want to be a steward, it is a good method to learn about the contract.

#2. Keep yourself updated and knowledgeable on current issues. Read* all of the Union newsletters and newspapers and the Union Bulletin board.

AND THE #1 RULE TO REMEMBER. . .
              WHEN IN DOUBT
         GIVE THE UNION A SHOUT!!!
