Leaf Bark Tree Flower/Cone/Fruit

COMMON NAME(S): Pear Tree 

LEAF: Ovate up to 3” long, toothed at the margins and pointed at the tip, shiny dark green on top and lighter below.  Carried on a stalk up to 2” long. 

BARK: Chestnut or blackish, cracked into tiny square scales. 

FLOWER: White with violet-red anthers , grow in coryombs of 7 – 10 flowers and appear in April, before the leaves. 

GROWTH: Up to 50’ high.  Branches sometimes with spiny branchlets. 

DISTRIBUTION: Throughout the U.S., possibly of Asian origin.
