LEAF: pinnately compound, 12-24"long, 9 to 21 leaflets, finely saw-toothed; long-pointed

BARK: dark brown; deeply furrowed into scaly ridges

FLOWERS:  small; greenish; 20 to 30 stamens, many in catkins

GROWTH: 70 to 90 feet

DISTRIBUTION: Eastern half of United States except northern border
