COMMON NAME(S):   Butternut, White Walnut

LEAF: pinnately compound; with hairy axis, sticky when young, 11-17 leaflets, broadly lance-shaped, pointed at tip

BARK: light gray; smooth becoming rough and furrowed

FLOWER:  small; greenish, many in catkins 

GROWTH: 40-70 feet

DISTRIBUTION: S. Quebec east to SW New Brunswick, south to extreme N. Georgia, west to Missouri, north to Minnesota
