COMMON NAME(S): Eastern Hemlock LEAF: Needles 5/16” – 9/16” long,
whitened beneath, attached to the twigs by slender stalks. BARK: Cinnamon red to dark purplish brown;
scaly or shaggy, with deep, rough vertical fissures . FLOWER: Cones (strobiles) are small and
pendulous, with winged scales. GROWTH: Height of 65’ – 115’. Trunk
usually branched down to the base. Diameter to 6’.
Top more rounded than spruces or firs. DISTRIBUTION: n. New England and e. Canada LOCATION: South Park, Quincy, IL |
