COMMON NAME(S):   European Larch

LEAF: needles (deciduous) are 3/4 to 1 1/4"long, soft, flattened with ridge beneath, 30-40 unequal in length, and crowded on spurs on leader twigs, light green turning yellow in autumn

BARK: gray, turning brown, thick, furrowed and scaly

CONE: 1-1 1/4" long, egg-shaped, reddish and rosebudlike when young

GROWTH: 70 feet

DISTRIBUTION: Native of N. and central Europe; grown in NE United States and SE Canada
