LEAF: opposite, 4-7" long and wide, palmately 5-lobed; edges with scattered long teeth5 to 7 veins from notched base

BARK: gray or brown; becoming rough and furrowed into narrow ridges

FRUIT: 1 1/2 - 2" long; paired keys spreading widely, light brown, hanging on long stalk

GROWTH: 60 feet

DISTRIBUTION: Native across Europe from Norway to Caucasus; widely planted in the United States
