COMMON NAME(S):   Nuttall Oak, Red Oak

LEAF: 4-8" long, elliptical; deeply divided into 7 or 5 narrow long-pointed lobes ending in a few bristle-topped teeth; wide sinuses between lobes

BARK: gray or brown, smooth; becoming black and furrowed into flat, scaly ridges

ACORN: 1/4-1 1/4" long; oblong, usually dark-striped, deep thick cup tapering to broad stalklike base

GROWTH: 60-100 feet

DISTRIBUTION: Alabama west to extreme E Texas, north to SE Missouri
