Leaf Bark Tree Flower/Cone/Fruit

COMMON NAME(S):   Sweetgum, Redgum, Sapgum

LEAF: 3-6: long and wide; star-shaped with 5 (sometimes 7) long-pointed, finely saw-toothed lobes and 5 main veins from notched base

BARK: grey; deeply furrowed into narrow scaly ridges

FRUIT: 1-1 1/4" in diameter; long-stalked drooping brown ball composed of many individual fruits, each ending in 2 long curved prickly points 

GROWTH: 60-100 feet

DISTRIBUTION: SW Connecticut south to central Florida, west to E Texas, north to S Illinois
